Travel documents for citizens of EU member countries

The following countries belong to the “Schengen Zone” of no border controls for their nationals. When arriving in Germany from these countries you do not need to show personal identification: Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary.

The following countries do not belong to the Schengen Zone:

Bulgaria, Great Britain/Northern Ireland, Ireland, Romania, Cyprus; from these countries you need a Visa if your visit will last longer than 90 days.

Citizens of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, and the United States of America can receive the necessary residency document after arrival in Germany. The same is true for citizens of Andorra, Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras, Monaco and San Marino, provided they do not plan to work in Germany after their arrival.

Citizens of all other countries not mentioned should look here for exact regulations. Some must obtain a visa before their arrival in Germany from the duly authorized German officials in their home country (e.g., German Embassy or Consulate).
