The Bavarian capital, with 1.5 million inhabitants, numbers among the great cities of the world. It is the home of the following companies listed on the German Stock Index DAX: Allianz, BMW, Linde, Munich Re, Siemens, MTU and Infineon. It has one of the highest qualities of life worldwide, the highest purchasing power in the FRG at around 30,000€ (Euros) per inhabitant, and about one-third of the population has a background as an immigrant. By the 19th Century it was the leading cultural city in Germany. Superb cultural institutions include the “Pinakothek” and “Deutsches Museum” (German Museum) and leading universities. Innovative centers such as the “Deutschlandzentralen” (German headquarters) of Microsoft, Apple and other large tech companies can also be found here.
