The Bavarian capital, with 1.5 million inhabitants, numbers among the great cities of the world. It is the home of the following companies listed on the German Stock Index DAX: Allianz, BMW, Linde, Munich Re, and Siemens. It has one of the highest qualities of life worldwide, the highest purchasing power in the FRG at around 30,000€ (Euros) per inhabitant, and about one-third of the population has a background as an immigrant. By the 19th Century it was the leading cultural city in Germany. Superb cultural institutions include the „Pinakothek“ and „Deutsches Museum“ (German Museum) and leading universities.
