This is the earliest Gothic cathedral in Germany and the burial place of the first German Emperor Otto the Great. He defeated the Hungarians, who had laid waste to vast portions of central Europe, in the Battle of Lechfeld. Again and again the cathedral was heavily damaged in wars, including World War II. Numerous bombs and fires destroyed only parts of the structure, however, so that it was able to be fully restored.
