Founded in 1970, it is the first and therefore oldest national park in Germany. The Bavarian Forest is the largest contiguous forest area in Bavaria. With its northwest, then northeast extension through the Upper Palatinate Forest, Fichtel Mountains, Ore Mountains and Sudetes, the forest area is the largest in Europe. With various waters, paths, zoos and museums, the Bavarian Forest offers a great excursion experience and great biodiversity. It contains rarely seen insects, as well as animal and endangered plant species.
