Weingarten Abbey
Type: Basilica
The old residence of the royal House of Welf was long called “Altdorf”. In the Baroque Era a new enormous cloister complex was erected but was only half completed. In the middle of this complex that can be seen from afar stands the church, which among other things contains a Gabler Organ. It also holds a religious relic of “Sacred Blood”, which is still carried annually through the meadows of the local valley by a large procession of horseback riders. After the “secularization” imposed by Napoléon, the complex came to the kingdom of Württemberg, which used it as a barracks. Today a Teacher Training College is located there. A few years ago the old Benedictine Abbey was closed.
